COMMITMENT: Gotta admire anyone who sets aside time in his or her life to make the world a better place. Gotta worship a person who does it on such a large scale that conflicts cease for a day and kids are saved from polio by the thousands, the millions. Jeremy Gilleyis such a person. He’s not a special person, as such, he’s not smarter than most of us, he’s not more powerful, he’s definitely not richer. The thing about Jeremy Gilley which brings out my outmost respect and my complete admiration for this man is the fact that he’s an ordinary man with an extraordinary commitment: A human being with a larger than life problem, which he takes on with more fierceness, creativity and will than most of us would devote to anything or anyone in our life time.
As I watched his film
”The Day after Peace” I really got the feeling that I was watching a Gandhi 2.0 in the making. Jeremy Gilley kept on and on, through the years, even when he was disappointed by the sheer apathy of both governments and officials, who did not support the Peace One Day in the first years after it was made into a UN resolution. I think we could all learn from his example – no matter what we want to do – that ultimately one person CAN change the world, and that people around the globe are ultimately interested in peace, even if it’s hard to attain.
